The Body and Blood of Christ - 10 June 2007

A Real Presence

In some Egyptian Coptic Orthodox tradition, there is a custom of families coming to Divine worship with home-baked unleavened bread. Some of this is chosen for use in the Divine Liturgy, the remainder is brought home and let decay untouched - as it could have been the Body of Christ. It teaches a reverence for the ordinary things of life.

For every Christian, there is that potential for greatness or the opposite. We can be the Body of Christ or not for one another. In the Rite of the Mass, the words read ‘On the night he was betrayed, he took bread from the table.’ It doesn’t say ‘the bread’ or that it was a special type. It was ordinary bread, as ordinary as our lives. In other words, Jesus takes ourselves and transforms it to his body and blood. On this Sunday we celebrate our identity as Christ’s Body.

And yet the words ‘bored’ and ‘Mass’ come together all too frequently in conversation. Why is this? Pope Paul VI used to pray this before every Mass; ‘Lord, grant me the grace to celebrate this Mass as if it were my first Mass, my only Mass, and my last Mass.’ Life is sweeter when we first realize that ill-health can intrude. Maybe our experience of how short our lives can be will help us gain wisdom of heart. Then we may become ‘Corpus Christi’ - the Body of Christ for each other.

Primary 7 Pledge
Alcohol and Drugs: At the 10.30am Mass on Sunday 17 June, Year 7 children from St. Mary’s Boys P.S., St. Mary’s Girls P.S. and the Gaelscoil will have an opportunity to make a promise that they will abstain from alcohol for a designated period and from the use of illegal drugs for life. There has been much comment recently about the problems of drug use, alcohol abuse and underage drinking in Ireland. Unfortunately we are all too aware of these issues in the Strabane area. This ceremony will be an opportunity for all of us to commit ourselves to a responsible approach to alcohol and drugs and to giving good example to our young people.
