Third Sunday of Advent – 13th December 2009
...

The theme of this Third Sunday of Advent is rejoicing. This Sunday is known as Gaudete Sunday. The word Gaudete means rejoice; the basis for this rejoicing is the nearness of the Lord. What everybody wants in life is to be happy, but what is the secret of happiness? The secret of happiness consists in being faithful to one’s commitments and responsibilities, while at the same time enjoying life. It’s easy to be happy when we are doing what we want. But to find happiness in what we have to do, not simply in what we want to do, this is a blessing from God. Happiness is not a shallow self-satisfaction. There can be no happiness for us as long as the things we do are different from the things we believe, and then there can be no happiness without love. Sadness falls upon us when we say ‘No’ to love. In the end, only God can fulfil our dreams and happiness is the best sign of his presence. The presence of God is the cause of our joy. The joy that this world cannot give is the joy that comes from a sense of God and his love for us.

Farewell to Fr Pat

This weekend Fr Pat O’Hagan is being installed as Parish Priest of Moville in Co Donegal. We wish him every blessing and success in his new appointment. Fr Pat has been with us in Melmount for over eight years, having spent the previous five years as curate in Camus – thirteen years in total just two miles away from his home in Sion Mills. He takes with him to Moville many talents and skills and he is looking forward with excitement to the challenges of a new place and a new role. We thank him very sincerely for his work and presence in Melmount since 2001 and we know that he will be very much missed here. Normally when we say farewell to one priest, we welcome another. Sadly this time the Bishop is not in a position to send us a replacement in the immediate future. So in the New Year, we will work out the implications of that for our parish and plan a way ahead.
