30th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Sunday, 23rd October 2011
... Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

“You must love the Lord your God with all your heart; you must love your neighbour as yourself.” Jesus gives us these two commandments as the only way to full human living and happiness. They are the core of Christian living and practice. We try everything else and yet love is all that human life is about here and hereafter. These two commandments go hand in hand as two parts of the one movement of life. Love of God is the ultimate in human life. It involves each of us in a personal relationship with God through prayer. Our Catholic tradition is very rich in the variety of prayer forms that are possible. Each of us needs to choose the ones that are helpful for ourselves. We reach this love of God also through our love for one another. In our common worship through the Sunday Eucharist we build up the People of God. And through love in marriage and family life we dedicate all that is good in life to God.

First Reading: Exodus 22:20-26
If you are harsh with the widow, or with the orphan,
my anger will flare against you.

Second Reading: Thessalonians 1:5-10
You broke with idolatry and became servants of God;
you are now waiting for his Son

Gospel: Matthew 9:1-8
You must love the Lord your God and your neighbour as yourself.

Mission Sunday

One day youngsters will learn words they will not understand.

Children from India will ask: ‘what is hunger?’

Children from Alabama will ask: ‘what is segregation?’

Children from Hiroshima will ask: ‘what is the atomic bomb?’

You will answer them. You will tell them those words are not used anymore. Like stagecoaches, galleys or slavery they are words no longer meaningful. That is why they have been removed from dictionaries.

Digital Map of Graveyard. You will see large maps showing the details and locations of graves in the old graveyard at the back of the church. These maps will eventually be in the graveyard to help people locate graves of relatives and friends and the information will be available to view on line. Over the next few weeks I would ask you to look at these maps and check that the information regarding your relatives is correct or if any changes or additions need to be made, for example, if someone buried in a grave has not been included or if a grave in a particular section has been omitted. You will find correction sheets on the tables at the back of the church and you are asked to use these to make any necessary changes. Please read the correction sheet carefully and give all the information requested so that the map may be completed as accurately as possible. If you are unsure of what to do or require any information please contact the Parish Office on 71383777.
