John Paul II Awards


Ten of our young parishioners were presented with their Pope John Paul II Award medals at a ceremony in the Millennium Forum last Monday Night. The medals were presented by Abbot Edmund Power, a Benedictine Monk, who is based in St. Paul’s Basilica Rome. We congratulate Anna Marie Boyle, Marie Devenney, Ciaran Doherty, Mark MacIntyre, Rachel McCrossan, Rachel McElhinney, Rosemary McGrath and Carrie McNulty all pupils of Holy Cross College, Aoife McBeth (Lumen Christi) and Ryan O’Kane (St. Columb’s). In all 16 pupils from Holy Cross College received medals.

 


St. Vincent de Paul, Strabane and District Members Lucky Lotto Monthly Draw took place on Sunday 7 February. The draws for January and February were made at this time. The winner for January was David Nelson who won £1000.00. The numbers drawn were 2, 11, 16 and 17. The winner for February was Vera McCay who won £1000.00. The numbers drawn were 3, 6, 15 and 24. The jackpot for March is £1000.00 and the draw will take place at 9.00pm at Melmount Parish Bingo on Sunday 7 March. Where you a past pupil at St. Mary’s Boys Primary School?

St. Mary’s Boys P.S. is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. To mark this momentous occasion the school is organising a series of events including a photographic exhibition in the Alley Theatre. The school is asking past pupils and families to share any photographs that they have during their time at St. Mary’s. These photos will be carefully scanned and returned to their owners. Please hand in your photographs to the school office as we would love to see what you have to share!

SPRED Group

Do you have two hours a week to give to the SPRED Group in the Parish? The work of SPRED is to encourage and facilitate growth in faith and spiritual development in people with special needs in the Parish. The only requirement to become a member of the group is an open and loving heart. The best way to experience the work of SPRED is to come and observe one of the sessions and then decide if it is something you would like to be involved in. Dates for Confirmation and First Holy Communion 2010

Bishop Hegarty will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to the Primary 7 pupils of our schools

on Saturday 15 May 2010 at 11.00am.

First Holy Communion for Primary 4 pupils of St. Mary’s Boys P.S. and St. Mary’s Girls

P.S. will take place on Saturday 22 May 2010.

First Holy Communion for pupils from the Gaelscoil will take place on Saturday 5 June 2010.

Aims: To provide sacred music for the liturgical functions associated with the church.

Melmount Folk Group

Aims: To provide liturgical music at Mass or any other sacred celebrations.

The group sing each week at the vigil Mass on Saturday evening and rehearsals take place on a fortnightly basis.

Aims: To bring spiritual help to members and to those they visit.

Activities: Visiting the sick; lonely; old; hospitals; homes; promotion of the rosary through circulation of the statue of Our Lady in the parish; book barrow for spiritual literature.

 

“SPRED” (Special Religious Education Division)

Melmount Centre, Strabane

Aims: Catechesis of the developmentally disabled

Activities: Spred is a diocesan network of parish based communities, whose primary aim is the faith development and parish integration of those with mild or severe learning difficulties (mentally handicapped). Also, it is an on-going adult faith development programme for those who volunteer to help.

 

Third Tyrone Scouting Ireland Group

Aims: To contribute to the development of its members in achieving their full spiritual, intellectual, physical, social and cultural potential as individuals so that they may take a constructive place in society.

Activities: Exploring/compass work; mapping; orienteering; hiking; climbing; camp craft (rope work, tying, cooking, pioneering etc.); physical fitness and first aid training; communications; water activities; international camping.

 

St Vincent de Paul Society

Aims: To help members grow in the love of God and their neighbours through direct personal services to others.

Main Activities: Visitation, hospitals and Greenfield Home; personal visits; bus for elderly; outings and holidays for elderly; helping those in need.

 

Knights of St Columbanus

“SEARCH” Youth Group

Termonbacca, Derry

Aims: For young people to meet regularly to pray and to share with each other their experiences of life. Getting to know about the opposite sex.

“Search” came to Ireland via America in 1985. To date 9,000-10,000 young people have taken part in the programme.
Search is for young adults ranging from 17-24 years of age.
